Well you brought back fond memories of my time being stationed in Germany Cecil.
I was in Frankfurt and Ramstein about 4 years for each tour.
The Germans do indeed handle their beer differently and that difference is apparent when you see American GIs in the mix. It's easy to pick out who is who.
Different parts of Germany, obviously have different customs. When we used to be in Bavaria, it was customary to see older German men (think your dad and grandfathers age), come into the Gasthaus and have a warmed beer (they had a square pan with heated water. We asked the owner (who we knew well from numerous trips, why the warm beer. He said that it was good for the older peoples stomach and digestion.
I was never a huge fan of the lighter beers, but they do do darker Dunkel beers and double dunkels, which are more of a brown ale. I partial to Stouts, so it was close enough.
I'm envious of your trip. Great memories there, especially this time of year with all the Christmas Markets.
Cool. I enjoy sharing stories like this because I get to learn about people and their experiences and in sharing, I learn more about the subject shared which is German beer. I’d never heard about the older Germans drinking warm beer. 🍻 Thanks for sharing.
That’s great- maybe too late- but the Stasi Museum is great place too visit- a little “Soviet chic”- have a friend whose office used to be in a Stasi building in Rostock- always a bit weird to me- and the Berlin Wall was called the “Anti- facilitator protection barrier”- Inthink there is still a special tax in place to held rebuild the Eastern side from when they moved the capital back from Bonn to Berlin in 1999 https://www.stasimuseum.de/en/enindex.htm

Anti-facism protection barrier- not facilitator- this auto correct drives me crazy
